Athens Alabama has a city school system composed of four elementary schools (Julian Newman Elementary, Brookhill Elementary, Athens Elementary, and Cowart Elementary), an intermediate school (Athens Intermediate School), a middle school (Athens Middle School), and a high school (Athens High School). Athens Alabama is located beside Interstate 65 so it has a growing commercial base including several big box retailers (Wal-Mart, Lowes) and several chain restaurants (Cracker Barrel, Applebee’s, Logan’s, Ruby Tuesday, etc). The City of Athens Parks and Recreation Department maintains and manages five city parks, the Athens Recreation Center, and the Athens Sportsplex.
